Abstract
888,511. Chain-shift change-speed gears. CYCLO GEAR CO. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 20902/59. Class 80 (2). Chain-shift change-speed gearing for bicycles comprises a pivoting bracket 20 attached to the frame of the bicycle and supporting two arms 16, 17 of a parallelogram linkage mounting at its end a carrier 21 within which is a torsion spring 29, Fig. 4, biasing a jockey roller &c. lever 26 in a direction to tension the drive-chain, the torsion of the spring being manually adjustable at the exterior of the carrier. The lever 26 is fast with a pin 24 which can rotate within a sleeve 25, rigid with the body of the carrier 21, a bolt 33 being screwed into a tapped hole at the end of the pin. One end 30 of a coiled spring 29 is fast with the body of the carrier 21 and engages at its other end a sleeve 28 having an apertured end coacting with the head of the bolt 33 and prevented thereby from turning. If the sleeve 28 is pushed leftwards of Fig. 4 out of engagement with the bolt 33 by hand, it can then be twisted to adjust the bias of the spring 29, allowing the sleeve to move back to the position shown, so that it engages the bolt head retaining the sleeve in its newly adjusted position. The arm 17 of the parallelogram linkage is biased by a spring 35, Fig. 1, against the action of a Bowden control cable 37 in a direction to engage the drivechain with the smallest of the nested driven sprockets 9. The bias of the spring 35 may be adjusted by mounting it on a pin having a non- circular end engaging in a similarly-shaped hole in the pivot bracket 20, Fig. 6 (not shown), or by mounting it on a pin which can be retained in a desired angular position by means of a lock-nut, Fig. 7 (also not shown). The end of the Bowden cable 37 is secured to an arm 41, Fig. 2, fast with the arm 16, the arm 41 coacting with spring- retained adjusting screws 42, 43 to limit the transverse ratio establishing motion of the linkage &c. The bracket 20 pivots freely in the direction away from the drive-chain, its motion in the opposite direction being limited by an adjustable stop-screw.
