887,891. Electromagnets. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 9, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 10693/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XL (a)] An electromagnet for a mass spectrometer has a base 6 and laterally-movable side walls 12, 28 enabling the insertion of heating pads 37, 38 for heating the spectrometer chamber 1. The side walls 12, 28 are moved by means of screwed rods 33, 34 and their lower ends are constrained to move in guides 35, 36. The magnetic circuit includes two core-pieces 29, 31 and the magnet coils 13, 32. Polepieces 23, 24 within the spectrometer chamber are mounted on side walls 15, 16 of magnetic material, one wall, 16, being rendered flexible by the provision of an annular groove 22, or the side walls 15, 16 may comprise thin flexible walls of non-magnetic material.
