Abstract
A lubricating composition comprises (A) a major proportion by weight of a mineral lubricating oil, (B) a minor proportion by weight, sufficient to increase the viscosity index of the mineral lubricating oil, of an alkyl methacrylate polymer, (C) a minor proportion by weight, sufficient to enhance the detergent characteristics of the mineral lubricating oil, of a neutral alkaline earth metal petroleum sulphonate having a base ratio not greater than 0,6, an alkaline earth metal phenate, a sulphurized alkaline earth metal phenate or a zinc aromatic dithiophosphate, or a mixture of two or more thereof, and (D) a minor proportion by weight, sufficient to stabilize the viscosity of the composition against increase over a period of time, of an alkanediol containing 4-8 carbon atoms. Ingredient (B) may be a polymer of an alkyl methacrylate containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical or a copolymer of such a methacrylate with one or more other monomers, such as lower alkyl methacrylates, dialkylaminoalkyl methacrylates, vinyl-substituted heterocyclic nitrogen compounds (e.g. vinyl pyridine and vinyl pyrrolidone) and polyglycol monomethacrylates (e.g. the dodecyl ether of octadecaethyleneglycol monomethacrylate). The composition may also contain zinc dithiophosphates without an aryl group, such as zinc butyl hexyl dithiophosphate. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing dodecyl methacrylate/octadecyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate/N-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer as ingredient (B); calcium petroleum sulphonate and/or sulphurized calcium tetradecyl phenate as ingredient (C); and 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexanediol or 2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol as ingredient (D). In some of the examples, the composition also contains zinc butyl hexyl dithiophosphate and a silicone foam inhibitor. The effect of replacing (D) by ethylene glycol or the dibutyl ether of diethylene glycol and the effect of omitting various ingredients is described.
