Abstract
The invention comprises sulphonyl mercapto-ethyl ureas of the formula R.SO2.NH.CO.NH.CH2.CH2.SH and corresponding disulphides of the formula <FORM:0887359/IV (b)/1> wherein R is phenyl optionally bearing 1 or 2 halogen or C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy substituents or a cycloalkyl or cycloalkyl-alkyl group of 6 or 7 carbon atoms, and their salts with physiologically tolerable bases. The compounds are made by reacting a sulphonyl urethane R.SO2.NH.COOR1 (R1=alkyl) or a sulphonyl acyl urea R.SO2.NH. CO.NH. acyl with cysteamine and optionally oxidising the resulting mercapto compound to the disulphide, e.g. with hydrogen peroxide, iodine or potassium ferricyanide, or by reacting a sulphonyl isocyanate R.SO2.NCO, a sulphonyl urethane R.SO2.NH.COOR1 or a sulphonyl acyl urea R.SO2.NH.CO.NH acyl with cystamine.ALSO:Preparations suitable for oral administration and having hypoglycaemic acitivity comprise sulphonyl mercaptoethyl ureas of the formula R.SO2.NH.CO.NH.CR2CH2.SH or the corresponding disulphides of the formula R.SO2.NH.CO.NH.CH2CH2.S.S.CH2CH2. NH.CO.NH.SO2.R wherein R is a phenyl radical optionally bearing one or two halogen or C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy substituents or is a cycloalkyl or cycloalkylalkyl radical of 6 or 7 carbon atoms (see Group IV (b)) in admixture or conjunction with a pharmaceutical carrier. The preparations suitably take the form of tablets, dragees, capsules or drops.
