Abstract

Solid dyeings and printings are produced on cellulose materials by applying thereto a water-soluble dye of the disazo, anthraquinone or nitro series containing in the molecule at least one group of the formula NHCOCH2CH2-halogen, or a water-soluble dye of the monoazo series containing in the molecule at least two of the above acylamino groups, and fixing the dyeings or printings on the fibre in the presence of acid-binding agents by steaming or heating to an elevated temperature. Advantageously, the dyes have little substantivity so that, after fixation, unreacted dye may easily be removed. Dyes containing at least two solubilising groups, such as SO3H groups or COOH groups or OH groups ortho to an azo group, are used. A neutral salt, e.g. sodium chloride or sulphate, is desirably present during dyeing or printing. A process temperature of at least 100 DEG C. is preferred. Alkali-metal formates, acetates, bicarbonates, carbonates, phosphates and hydroxides may be used as acid-binding agents, and the corresponding ammonium compounds and basic aliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic amino compounds may also be used. Urea is a preferred additive for the printing paste. Where appropriate the dyes may be metallized in substance or on the fibre. Examples are provided, typical of the dyes used being 1 - amino - 3 - (b - chloropropionylamino) - benzene-6-sulphonic acid (2 mols) --> 1-amino-8-naphthol-4,6-di-sulphonic acid (1 mol), 1-amino-3-(b -chloropropionylamino)-benzene-6-sulphonic acid --> 2-(b -chloropropionylamino)-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid or 1-(41-b -chloropropionylamino - 21 - sulphophenyl - 3 (- methyl - 5 - pyr -) azolone, the product of condensing equimolar proportions of 4,41-diamino-diphenylamine-3,21-disulphonic acid and 2,6-dinitro-1-chlorobenzene-4-carboxylic acid subsequently acylated with b -chloropropionyl chloride, 1-naphthol-3,6-disulphonic acid \sM 4,41-diaminodiphenyl-cyclohexane --> 1-(b -chloropropionylamino)-8-naphthol-3,6-disulphonic acid (alkaline couplings), 1 - amino - 3 - (b - chloropropionylamino) - benzene-6-sulphonic acid --> resorcinol \sM 2-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid (copper complex) and <FORM:0886379/IV (c)/1> Brown, red, blue and yellow shades are obtained. Specifications 868,492 and 886,380 are referred to.
