Abstract

Semi-chemical neutral sulphite pulp is made by first steaming wood chips, then impregnating them with an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite and bisulphite which has a pH value of 9,5-6 and which contains no free or combined carbonic acid, removing the excess impregnating solution, digesting the pulp without any free liquor at 165-175 DEG C. and subsequently mechanically defibrating the pulp. During the impregnation period the temperature is preferably kept below 110 DEG C., suitably at about 100 DEG C. or lower. The duration of the impregnation is preferably at least 30 minutes and more preferably 60-120 minutes. The impregnation of the steamed wood chips may be effected by compressing them and then, while they are still under pressure, introducing them into the impregnation liquor, the chips being allowed to expand in the impregnation liquor by releasing the pressure while they are immersed in the liquor, and the chips being left in the impregnation liquor for at least 3 minutes, preferably more than 10 minutes. After the defibration step, without appreciable dilution with water, the pulp may be pressed to a dry content of at least 40%. Prior to this pressing the pulp may be diluted with waste liquor obtained by pressing a previous batch of pulp. The process enables pulps of exceptional brightness to be obtained with a relatively low consumption of chemicals.
