Abstract

884,419. Radio receiving systems; automatic gain control. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 11, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 22318/58. Class 40(5). In an interference suppression circuit for negatively modulated television signals, the video signal which includes synchronizing pulses 12, 13, Fig. 2, and interference pulses 21, 22 is applied to the control grid 5 of an amplifier 1 whose screen grid is biased by contrast control 7, 8, the peaks of the interference pulses being removed by diodes 23, 24 and added in phase opposition to the amplified video signal in line and frame separators 25, 26. The control grid cut-off potential of valve 1 is indicated by line 11 in Fig. 2 and in order that diodes 23, 24 should pass the peaks of interference pulses which exceed the synchronizing pulses 12, 13, resistors 9, 10 are chosen so that line 11 corresponds to earth potential. If the contrast control 7, 8 is altered, i.e. a new screen grid voltage Vg<SP>11</SP> 2 is chosen, the amplitude of pulses 12<SP>1</SP>, 131 with respect to the new line 11<SP>1</SP> is slightly larger, resulting in a smaller A.G.C. voltage from valve 15 and a corresponding increase in the amplitude of the detected video signal, so that again the interference peaks which exceed the synchronizing pulse amplitude are removed. The interference suppression circuit thus functions independently of the contrast control adjustment. Automatic gain control. The anode of valve 15 is supplied with positive blanking pulses 16. Cathode 14 has a positive bias owing to its connection to the junction of resistors 9, 10, and the bias is counteracted by -supplying a corresponding bias from potential divider 18, 19 to grid 17. In an alternative circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), resistor 9 is omitted, diodes 23, 24 are biased from point 7 through a resistor, and are connected to grid 5 through an R.C. network, potential divider 18, 19 being omitted and grid 17 being earthed.
