Abstract

Selective reduction of oxides of nitrogen in gases containing oxides of nitrogen and free O2 is effected by combustion of a mixture of the gas with NH3 in contact with a catalyst containing Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ir, or Os, or mixtures thereof. Gases are waste gases from the production of HNO3 by oxidation of NH3 containing N2, O2 NO, and NO2 and may be mixed with the stoichiometric amount up to 10 times this amount of NH3. Temperatures are 150-400 DEG C. at atmospheric - 150 p.s.i.g. pressure and space velocities 3000-100,000 v/v/hr. The catalyst may be 0,01-2% metal on pellet, granule, or powder support of alumina, silica, or diatomaceous earth. Specification 849,842 also is referred to.
