Abstract
883,819. Helicopters. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. March 25, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 10785/59. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A jet propulsion engine, mounted at the outer end of a helicopter rotor blade 10, includes a hub in which coaxial rotors of the turbine and compressor of the engine are journalled, directly mounted, in chordally-spaced positions from the radially-outer end 11 of a main spar of the blade such that the centre of gravity of the hub and rotor assembly lies substantially on the axis of the hub and on a longitudinal axis of the blade passing between the mounting positions. The member 12, integral with the engine hub, is attached to the end of the spar by two pairs of interleaving lugs 13 and 14, 15 and 16, each having a fixing pin 17. The torque on the blade 10 due to the off-setting of the air inlet opening 38 and the jet nozzle 58 opposes that due to the gyro torque of the engine. The stationary parts of the engine (see Group XXVI) are arranged so that the centre of gravity of the engine as a whole is substantially in the same position as that of the hub and rotor assembly.
