An A.C. plungertype electromagnet has a magnetic stop member 4 with a copper shading ring 15 and a coaxial hole 16 or circular recess which is said to increase the pull and reduce chattering. The plunger 7 slides in a non-ferrous sleeve 6 which is tapered at one end 13 to secure it to the stop. The electromagnet has a U- shaped iron frame 1 closed by an end plate, not shown.
