Abstract
Sorbic acid is prepared by reacting ketene with crotonaldehyde at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C. and preferably below 50 DEG C. in the presence of at least one fatty acid salt of cadmium, iron, nickel, mercury, cobalt or zinc, in which the fatty acid component has at least 4 carbon atoms, and at least one inert solvent, which may be excess crotonaldehyde, distilling off the solvent and unreacted crotonaldehyde, and distilling the polymeric product so obtained, which still contains the catalyst, in the presence of at least one inert gas and with the exclusion of oxygen to yield sorbic acid. Distillation temperatures of 125 DEG C.-270 DEG C. may be used for decomposing the polymer, while an alkali metal compound having a distinct alkaline reaction and/or 2%-15% of an inert solvent of higher boiling point than sorbic acid may be added; reduced pressure is preferred, but atmospheric or superatmospheric pressures may be used.
