Abstract

The properties of aqueous emulsions or dispersions of high polymers of vinyl compounds, acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene and cellulose esters are modified by incorporating, in an aqueous emulsion or suspension of one of said high polymers, one or more monofunctional olefinic monomers, which are capable of being polymerized in the presence of water to form an aqueous emulsion or suspension, and subjecting the mixture to ionizing radiations, such as X-rays, y-rays, accelerated electrons or neutrons, to effect grafting of at least a part of the monomer on to the high polymer. The vinyl polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or acetate and the monomer may be styrene or an acrylate or methacrylate.
