Abstract

The process of the parent Specification, for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons using a catalyst comprising an aluminium halide, an aryl mercury compound and a finely divided vanadium oxide and in the presence of a halogen-containing liquid, is modified in that the process is effected in the presence of a liquid medium which is a saturated straight chain hydrocarbon or a saturated cyclic hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbon may be n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane, n-dodecane, cyclohexane or methylcyclohexane.
