[Also in Group XX] Record tapes or films, contained in reversible magazines, are prevented from spilling, when removed from a playing machine by automatic tensioning means in the magazines. In an embodiment described with reference to magnetic record/ playback apparatus, Fig. 1, spools 12, 13 are engaged on their edges by a wedge-form brake member 31, which, under the action of a spring 48, tends to rotate the spools in opposite directions so as to maintain a tight bight of tape 17 across guide rollers 18, 23 to facilitate loading of the magazine to a tape-deck 24 equipped with locators 26, a tape-drive capstan 29 and heads 28, 30. Advancement of a member (not detailed) carrying a pinch roller and head pressure pads engages the advanced end of the member 31 to release the brakes. Resiliently raised splined members 55 either engage co-operating members 15 in the spools, or in the absence of a magazine rise further so that a key 64 can drive a conventional separately loaded spool. Two or more pairs of members 55 may accommodate a plurality of magazine sizes. A compact form of magazine, Fig. 6, uses overlapped single-cheek spools, on which the tape is retained by internal projections 82, 83 and the alternate spool cheeks. A photo-electric arrangement (Fig. 7, not shown) may stop and/or reverse the tape drive at the ends of its travel.
