Abstract
Acetone-soluble copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride are produced by polymerizing a mixture containing from 30 to 65 weight per cent of acrylonitrile and from 70 to 35 weight per cent of vinylidene chloride in solution in an aqueous acetic acid solution containing at least 55% by weight of acetic acid, the polymerization being promoted by an initiator or initiator system which is soluble in the aqueous acetic acid, particularly a redox system such as a mixture of ammonium persulphate or sodium chlorate with potassium metabisulphite, which may be used in conjunction with salts of metals such as copper or silver. In a preferred process the metal salt and monomers are dissolved in the mixed solvent and the redox initiator components are then added slowly, either continuously or intermittently.
