Abstract

Compounds having a 1:2-epoxy equivalency greater than 1,0 may be hardened with complexes of (i) Friedel-Crafts metal halides or BF3 and (ii) a dihydric or polyhydric alcohol or a monoether of such an alcohol, said dihydric or polyhydric alcohol containing at most 8C. Polyepoxides specified are polyglycidyl ethers of glycols, glycerine, 2,4,6-hexanetriol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, bisphenol A, or phenol-formaldehyde condensation products; polyglycidyl esters of phthalic and terephthalic acid; and butadiene dioxide. Hardeners specified are (i) BF3 and the chlorides of Sb, Sn, Al, Fe and Zn; and (ii) a large number of dihydric alcohols of which triethylene glycol is preferred; glycerol and hexanetriol-2,4,6; and C1-4 monoethers of dihydric alcohols, of which ethylene glycol monomethyl ether is preferred. Optional additives include fillers (e.g. silica, quartz and kaolin) and reactive solvents, e.g. an excess of (ii). Uses: Dental fillings, crowns and prostheses. Tin foil cups. Enclosures for the end of cables. Joining metals (e.g. an alloy of Al, Mg and Si). Coating metals, e.g. Al, Fe. Specifications 806,447 and 810,412 are referred to.
