Abstract
881,876. Magnetic compositions. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 22, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1958], No. 2486/59. Class 38 (2). A magnetic recording member, e.g. a tape, has a coating comprising cobalt iron ferrite having the formula CoxFe 3 -xO 4 , where x is from 0.04-0.30. A mixture of cobalt oxide and magnetite is sintered in air at 1000-1500‹ C., ground to a size of 1 micron, mixed with a binder e.g. polyvinyl chloride, ground for 14 days in a ball mill or 2 days in an attritor, and coated on to a backing material e.g. a film of insulating tape of thickness 1.5 mils. The coating may be 0.13 or 0.33 mil. in thickness and have the formula CO 0 . 15 Fe 2 . 85 O 4 .
