Abstract
Zinc is recovered from zinc-bearing slag of low lead content, e.g. from a lead blast furnace, by blowing into the molten slag a pulverised carbonaceous fuel of low hydrogen content together with only sufficient air to produce a reducing mixture of CO + CO2. The liberated zinc vapour is condensed, in for example, a lead-splash condenser of the type described in Specification 572,961. Slag of high lead content may first be blown with a carbonaceous fuel and sufficient air to burn the fuel to carbon dioxide, the air being carefully controlled to minimise liberation of zinc while avoiding the formation of magnetite or zinc ferrite. Lead is volatilised as lead sulphide; lead oxide dross or similar plumbiferous material may be added to the slag to promote sulphur removal and enhance the efficiency of condensation in the subsequent zinc recovery stage. Dross from the zinc condenser, which contains much lead, may be sintered with zinc-bearing lead concentrates, and charged to the lead blast furnace.
