Abstract
880,820. Rolling. INNOCENTI SOC. GEN. PER L'INDUSTRIA METALLURGICA E MECCANNICA. July 9, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 23668/59. Class 83(4). A feed trolley for a pilger-type tube rolling mill is fed slowly by a screw and nut device during approach, rolling and mandrel stripping steps and by a further quickfeed mechanism for approach and return movements in bringing a fresh blank to the rolls. A blank 4 is rapidly advanced to the rolls by the operation of cranks 17, 17<SP>1</SP> rotated through 180 degrees by a motor 19 to move a feed trolley 1 attached to the cranks through connecting rods 16, 16<SP>1</SP>. A motor 11 is then started to rotate a feed screw 5 through a splined shaft 9 and gearing 8, 7 so that the reaction of the screw thread on a nut 14 accommodated in a stud 15 secured to the connecting rods 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and slidable on the trolley 1 causes slow uniform feed of the trolley and blank 4 during the period of initial engagement with the rolls, the rolling period and the stripping period. After stripping against a stationary bush 23 a fast return of the trolley is effected by rotation of the cranks 17, 17<SP>1</SP> in the reverse direction while at the same time running the screw in reverse. In a modification the motor driving the feed screw may be directly mounted on the trolley. Alternative quick-feed mechanisms include hydraulic cylinders 26, 26<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 8, not shown), a rack and pinion mechanism, a rope and pulley, or a chain and sprocket mechanism.
