A machine for winding wire includes a take-up block arranged to have wire coiled thereabout with the convolutions descending by gravity therefrom, a support for accumulating such convolutions in the form of an upwardly growing package, and means to rotate said support about an upwardly-extending axis that is offset with respect to the axis of the descending convolutions whereby the convolutions are laid in circular progression on said support to form an annular package of outside diameter larger than the diameter of the individual convolutions. Wire W is laid around a fixed take-up block 5 by a flyer assembly 6 rotated therearound and is held against the block 5 by a roller 15 on the flyer 6. The top turns on the block 5 are guided therefrom by a fixed funnel 16 to a fall on to a turn-table 21. Swingable accumulator fingers 19 support the wire coils above the turntable 18 to permit removal of completed coil or package from the turn-table. The turntable 18 is provided with a roller conveyer 20 to facilitate removal of a completed coil supported on a platform 21. In operation the axis of rotation of the turn-table, which is offset from the axis of the take-up block 5, is inclined to the vertical. Three guide rolls 24 parallel to the inclined axis of the turn-table 18 engage the wire convolutions as they are laid on the turn-table 18 which is slowly rotated so that the convolutions form the appropriate form of package or stack, Fig. 2. A wirereceiving drum may be mounted on the turntable. The turn-table 18 may be swung by a pneumatic cylinder 31 to a horizontal position. The turn-table may be in the form of a basket 45, Fig. 4. In a modification, Fig. 5, a turntable 50 has an upstanding core 51 along which convolutions of the wire W descend from a curved horn 52 receiving convolutions from a take-up block having a horizontal axis. A counterweighted finger 24 on the horn allows the wire to drop in hanks of several convolutions at a time on to the turn-table 50 so that said hanks are laid in circular progression thereon.
