Abstract
880,501. Winding and reeling wire. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. April 26, 1960 [July 27, 1959], No. 14631/60. Class 83 (4). Machine for winding and reeling wire includes a vertical rotary take-up block around which the wire is wrapped to drop therefrom in the form of convolutions into a container on a rotating turn-table, an accumulator between the block and the turn-table rotated in the same direction as the turntable, an actuator operative to move the accumulator from an inactive position in which the convolutions descend therepast to an active position whereat the descent of the convolutions is arrested. Wire W is wrapped around a capstan 5, rotated from a shaft 6 through a clutch 35, gears 15, 14, and hollow shaft 12, the turns being forced upwardly by a bevelled shoulder 16 and pressed against the capstan by a roller 17. The top turns drop into a container D supported on a turn-table 9 driven from a shaft 10 through clutch and gear means. The turntable 9 may be driven at a speed the same as or slower than that of the capstan 5 or at a varying speed. An accumulator 7, for holding coils when the container D is full and being replaced, comprises fingers 24 pivoted to a plate 23 in a tubular shaft 20 journalled in the capstan drive shaft 12 and rotated from a shaft 8 through a clutch 36 and gears 26, 25. The fingers 24 are swung up from an inoperative to an operative position by a rod 23 moved axially within the shaft 20 by a pneumatic cylinder 29. A counter 38 driven from the gear 15 counts the revolutions of the capstan and, when a predetermined number of convolutions are in the container D, energizes the clutch 36 to rotate the accumulator 7, operates a valve 32 to cause the pneumatic cylinder 29 to move the accumulator fingers 24 to their operative position and de-energizes a clutch in the drive to the turn-table 9. The wire W may then be cut out and the full container D replaced by an empty one while the wire turns are being accumulated on the fingers 24 to be dropped into the empty container D when the latter is in position. The accumulator 7 and turn-table 9 may be driven by the same motor. A line of pairs of machines may be driven by the shafts 6, 8 and 10.
