Abstract
880,352. Making stud and socket fasteners. UNITED CARR - FASTENER CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1959 [Oct. 1, 1958], No. 33236/59. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A method of manufacturing a socket member of a stud and socket fastener includes the steps of subjecting a blank of sheet metal to a drawing operation to form a cup, forming a series of radial slots 16 in the end wall and adjacent portions of the side wall of the cup, piercing the end wall to form a central aperture 18 such that the peripheral edge of the aperture is defined by the slotted portions of the end wall and inwardly bending the slotted portions of the end wall to form a series of resilient segments which deface a stud recurring opening such that the segments are adapted to make snapping engagement with a stud inserted into the opening. The drawing operation is a double operation to produce a small cup 14 superimposed on a large cup 14. The edge around the aperture is also turned back to form a lip 22. The inward bending of the end wall pushes the peripheral wall 24 of the cup 14 into the cup 12 and the end wall of the cup 12 becomes a wall 28 surrounding the wall 24. At this stage the diameter of the inner wall 24 at the lip 22 is smaller than its diameter at its junction with the wall 28 ; the wall 28 is then wiped towards the inner wall by using a punch which strikes the wall 28 at the junction with the wall 24 and a sizing pin curls the lip 22 to a greater extent. The wall 24 is also pressed towards the wall 28 to bring the two walls into close proximity, both walls being at an angle to the axis of the socket member. The socket is then blanked out and finished as required.
