Abstract

Gaseous hydrocarbons and liquid hydrocarbons of low boiling point are converted into a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide by passing the hydrocarbon in admixture with steam and/or carbon dioxide through an externally heated multi-tubular reaction zone containing a catalyst while maintaining at the outlet to the reaction zone a temperature between 1350 DEG and 1700 DEG F., preferably between 1450 DEG and 1600 DEG F., and a pressure of at least 50 p.s.i.g., preferably between 65 and 150 p.s.i.g., the steam to methane or methane equivalent mol. ratio being at least 1,8:1 and the space velocity corresponding to at least 700 volumes of methane or methane equivalent per hour per volume of catalyst. The hydrocarbon feed is preheated to between 400 DEG and 1250 DEG F., preferably between 800 DEG and 1150 DEG F., while the steam to methane or methane equivalent ratio is preferably between 2,1:1 and 2,6:1. The tubes of the reaction zone have an outside diameter of between 2 1/2 and 5 inches and the catalyst is preferably nickel oxide or nickel and calcium oxides on a silica-alumina support in the form of spheres or pellets having a diameter or length between 1/4 and inch. The hydrocarbons converted may be methane, ethane, propane, butane, natural gas, liquefied petroleum, gas or nephtha.
