879,853. Making turbine blades. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., HENRY. Oct. 11, 1957 [Sept. 3, 1956], No. 26906/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A turbine or compressor blade, having longitudinal cooling passages, is formed by extrusion through a die of aerofoil section. A shroud or root is formed by cutting the extrusion for some distance along the major axis and then working the metal laterally, at each side of the separation. The filling, in the cooling passages, is removed at the end where the shroud or roof is to be formed. During the shroud forming process, the length of extrusion is inserted in a two-part die, of the shape of the blade, the metal being at the forging temperature. The shroud forming metal projects from the die, and after cutting, a pressing tool spreads the metal to produce the shroud.
