Abstract

879,628. Printing-surfaces. OXFORD PAPER CO. Nov. 20, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958; Nov. 12, 1959], No. 39450/59. Class 100(2) A photographic printing plate comprises base stock having thereon a cured insolubilized coating composition comprising essentially an insolubilized cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol adhesive, and pigment of clay and colloidal silica, the latter having a particle size between 7 and 30 millimicrons, and said polyvinyl alcohol being insolubilized with a cross-linking agent. To the pigment is added the adhesive in a pigmentadhesive ratio of between 3:1 and 7:1, the adhesive being hydrolized above 88 %: There is then added the cross-linking agent, which may be a 50 % solution of N, N <SP>1</SP>-ethylene dimethylol cyclic urea, trimethylol phenol, tris (hydroxy methyl) nitromithane, urea-formaledhyde, melamine formaldehyde, or glyoxal. There is then added a catalyst, e.g. zinc phenol sulphonate, zinc sulphamate, zinc silico-fluoride, zinc chloride, zinc acetate, alum, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate, ammonium phosphate, lead, calcium, manganese, cerium or lanthanum salts, followed by acetic acid as a thinning agent.
