Abstract

Organic nitrogen and sulphur containing compounds, assumed to be heterocyclic, are prepared by reacting alkylidene vinylamines of formula <FORM:0879374/IV (b)/1> where R represents hydrogen or alkyl with sulphur or polysulphides, such as ammonium polysulphide. When sulphur is used, elevated temperatures not exceeding about 200 DEG C. are used, but with polysulphides, the reaction commences at room temperature and the temperature should not exceed 100 DEG C. In some cases, two nitrogen- and sulphur-containing products are obtained, one having approximately twice the molecular weight of the other. A solvent such as dimethyl formamide may be used. The alkylidene vinylamide may be prepared in situ by introducing ammonia into a mixture of a carbonyl compound and the sulphur or polysulphide. The products are stated to be of use as medicaments, corrosion and oxidation-inhibitors, vulcanising media, fungicides and pesticides. Examples describe the preparation of products from i-butylidene-b b - dimethylvinylamine (which is sometimes prepared in situ from i-butyraldehyde and ammonia) and i-hexylidene-b -methyl-b -propylvinylamine. Picrates of the products are prepared. Reference is also made to products derived from the mixtures of aldehydes derived from the catalytic hydrogenation of C7-9 alcohols occuring as by-products in the catalytic production of isobutanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
