Abstract
879,254. Securing wrenches on shafts. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Oct. 7, 1958 [Dec. 23, 1957], No. 8249/61. Divided out of 874,834. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A wrench socket 20 comprises a splined bore 26 which is chamfered at 27 and 40, and a polygonal recess 21 for the reception of a nut &c. The socket is driven by the splined shaft 19 of a rotary power-operated tool, and is detachably secured to the shaft by a detent 34, the radial position of which is controlled by a spring-urged plunger 46 slidable in an axial bore in the shaft 19. To assemble the socket on the shaft, the splines are aligned, and the socket is moved along the shaft until the chamfer 27 abuts the detent 34, which is locked against radial inward movement by the plunger 46. The operator pushes the plunger against the spring 54, and the chamfer 27 moves the detent into a recess 59 in the plunger 46, thus allowing the socket to be moved further along the shaft. The plunger is released, and the detent is moved radially outward to engage the chamfer 40, by the spring 54, thus locking the socket against separation from the shaft.
