Each plate of a supply-pressure filter press is provided with a short horizontal member 25, 25a ... in the plane of the plate, through which member passes a pin 28 on which is mounted a two-armed locking hook 35, 36, Fig. 3, which is cranked along its length. The arm 35, when the plates are in normal position for filtering, engages the projecting end of the pin 28a of one of the neighbouring plates (the right-hand one, as seen in Fig. 3), the plates being thereby retained when the clamping means (not shown), is released. The plates may be separated one at a time from the assembly and moved to the left by a series of equally-spaced pawls 26 pivoted on a leftward moving endless chain 23. Any pawl which for the time being is above the assembly of plates rides along, and is maintained horizontal, by its lower surface 33 sliding along the tops of the members 25, 25a. . . this being the position of the pawl shown in Fig. 2. When the surface 33 of a pawl has passed beyond the member 25 of the left-most plate of the assembly the pawl swings clockwise by an amount governed by a pin-and-slot connection 31, 32, whereupon a pin 34 on the pawl (see also Fig. 2), comes in contact with the arm 36 of the locking hook of the left-most plate and tilts the hook to the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position the arm 35 is freed from the pin 28a of the neighbouring plate to the right. Shortly afterwards the hook head 37 of the pawl (which has fallen between members 25a and 25) makes contact with member 25 and tows the plate to which it is attached to the left. On reaching the clamping head or fixed abutment at the end of the press a control surface on the press frame raises the pawl to free the plate (when this is the first plate to reach the end of the " displacement path "); subsequent plates are freed from their pawls at the end of the displacement path by contact of surface 33 with member 25 of the previous plate.
