Abstract

A process for polymerizing an olefin in the presence of a liquid reaction medium, an aluminium alkyl halide and a compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa, the polymer being treated first with steam and then simultaneously with a normally liquid aliphatic alcohol and hydrogen chloride, is modified by using an alcohol containing not more than 5 carbon atoms in the molecule and a concentration of hydrogen chloride of not more than 1% of the alcohol. The treated polymer may then be neutralized with aqueous ammonia.
