Abstract

878,401. Testing bending-fatigue of materials AVIATION, MINISTER OF. Dec. 22, 1959 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 41688/58. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] Apparatus for testing bending-fatigue of wire, rod, strip and the like comprises a pair of cooperating cylindrical or part-cylindrical rockers 1, 2, mounted with their curved surfaces adjacent and oscillatable about parallel axes, clamping means 16, 17 for holding a specimen 9 so that it passes between the rockers 1, 2 in an inflected curve and means for imparting a rotary reciprocating motion to the rockers whereby the inflection is moved back and forth along the specimen. In the embodiment shown the specimen, in the form of a wire, lies in grooves 14 machined in the surfaces of the rockers. The rockers 1, 2 are mounted on shafts to which are fixed a second pair of co-operating rockers 3, 4, Fig. 3. These latter are interconnected by two strips 22, 23 and the lower rocker 4 is reciprocated by a crank (not shown) driven from an electric motor. The specimen is clamped between tiebars 16 and clamps 17 and is tensioned by use of a spring 21. A similar arrangement applies to the driving strips 22, 23. In use the specimen is oscillated until it breaks or it may be inspected after a given number of oscillations. The rockers may be made of insulating material and the circuit for the electric motor may be connected through the specimen, so that the driving motor will stop immediately the specimen breaks. Alternatively, the driving bands 22, 23 may be used in a similar way. Various other forms of test rocker are described, suited to different types of test piece and the upper rockers are adjustable in position to allow the use of larger rockers or a thicker test piece. The rockers may also be extended to carry several test specimens at one time.
