Abstract

878,105. Transistor switching circuits. COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLES DES TELEPHONES. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 8, 1957], No. 35898/58. Class 40(6) A switching circuit comprises a transistor having two electrodes connected to the points across which a connection is to be made and the third electrode having its potential and thus the state of conductivity of the transistor controlled by a gas discharge tube. Fig. 1 shows a transistor circuit in which it is required to make a connection between points A and B in dependence upon the state of conductivity of the PNP junction transistor T. When gas discharge tube L is not conducting the base of transistor T is positive with respect to the emitter and the transistor is blocked. When switches H and V are closed gas tube L conducts the voltage drop across resistor L being sufficient to cause the transistor T to conduct. The transistor may be blocked again by interrupting the current flow through gas tube L by opening switch V. An alternative arrangement of triggering the gas discharge tube is described, Fig. 2, not shown. Fig. 3 shows a matrix comprising m horizontal rows and q vertical columns only rows X1, X2 and Xm with columns Y1, Y2 and Yq being shown. The connections between any given row and any given column being determined by the state of conductivity of the transistor connecting the cross over points. As described in connection with Fig. 1 each transistor is controlled in dependence upon the state of conductivity of an associated gas discharge tube. Only that gas tube will be struck and its associated transistor rendered conductive which by operation of the associated switches has appropriate potentials applied to its anode cathode and trigger electrodes. If for example tube L21 has been struck so that transistor T21 bridges row X2 and column Y1 then the voltage drop across resistor R1 c prevents the firing of any other gas tube in column Y1. If the voltage Vs is suppressed the tube L21 memorises its operation and continues to operate between anode and cathode so that to stop operation it is necessary to open switch V1 in the circuit which provides the appropriate cathode potential. Specification 861,139 is referred to.
