Abstract

Fly ash from the burning of pulverised coal is calcined and powdered and used as a filter aid. Preferably, access of air to the material is restricted during calcining to ensure retention of some ignitable material. The product may be calcined a second time. One or more alkali metal salts may be added to the material as a flux for siliceous constituents. Ranges of ignitable matter content, of calcining temperatures and of flux proportions, are given.
