Abstract

An alkylamine is recovered from a mixture with an alcohol and water by a two-stage distillation process of which one stage is effected at subatmospheric pressure and the other stage at superatmospheric pressure, the amine-enriched product from the first stage forming the charge for the second stage. Preferably, the mixture is first distilled at subatmospheric pressure, e.g. 25-600 mm., to recover an overhead product enriched in alkylamine, and this product is then distilled at superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 30-150 p.s.i.a., to recover the alkylamine as bottom product. The mixture is preferably stripped of ammonia and other low-boiling constituents before the treatment. Examples are given of the recovery of di-isopropylamine from a mixture with aqueous isopropanol and of triethylamina from a mixture with aqueous ethanol. Mention is made also of the recovery of propylamine from a mixture with aqueous propanol. U.S.A.
