Abstract
The invention comprises 2-(2-formyl-4-chlorophenoxy)-propionic acid and its alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts and a process for their preparation by reacting 2-formyl-4-chloro-phenol with an acid of the formula CH3CHXCOOH, where X represents the acid residue of a reactive ester, or an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt of the acid.ALSO:A composition having anabolising properties when fed to animals comprises a food-stuff containing 0,001% to 1% by weight of one or more compounds selected from 2-(2-formyl-4-chlorophenoxy) - propionic acid and its alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts. Plant growth regulating compositions comprise an inert carrier or diluent in association with at least 0,5 p.p.m. of one or more compounds selected from 2-(2-formyl-4-chlorophenoxy)-propionic acid and its alkali metnl, ammonium and amine salts. The composition may take any of the usual solid ot liquid forms using the usual herbicidal diluents and surfactrants. The compounds' properties are demonstrated by acceleration of the functioning of meristematic tissue, formation of new roots and formation of parthenocarpic fruits.
