Abstract
Pigments contain titanium dioxide in its rutile modification as the basic component and, as addition components, on the one hand tungsten oxide or a mixture of tungsten oxide and the oxide of antimony, bismuth, vanadium and/or uranium, and on the other hand the oxide of lithium, magnesium, zinc, divalent manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or copper, aluminium, gallium, copper, trivalent titanium, chromium, manganese and/or iron or mixtures of two or more of these oxides, the amounts of said additional components used being such that the total average statistical valency of the cations is about four. Mixtures of the components may be converted into the mixed crystals at elevated temperatures particularly at red heat. Instead of the oxide components there can be used compounds of the various metals which are converted by heating into the oxides. Thus for example instead of titanium dioxide, titanium hydroxide can be used; and instead of the oxides of manganese or zinc there can be used the hydroxides, carbonates, acetates, nitrates or formates. Small amounts of a fluidizing agent such as lithium or sodium fluoride may also be added. In a typical example the oxide components are mixed together, calcined for half an hour at 800 DEG C., and then pulverized and calcined for a further half hour at 1000 DEG C. Numerous examples using various mixtures of oxides are given.
