Abstract
Adiponitrile is prepared from ammonia and adipic acid by introducing the adipic acid as a powder suspended in a stream of ammonia at a temperature below the melting point of the adipic acid into a chamber in which it is melted, or both melted and vaporized, by the introduction of further ammonia at a suitably elevated temperature, if necessary heating the resulting mixture to vaporize the adipic acid, and passing the resulting mixture of ammonia and adipic acid vapour in contact with a dehydration catalyst. The total amount of ammonia employed is preferably 1.85-2.3 times the weight of the adipic acid, and the reaction temperature is preferably 350-370 DEG C. An example uses boron phosphate (obtained by mixing equivalent quantities of boric and phosphoric acids) as catalyst.
