Abstract
877,333. Purifying radio-isotopes. CENTRE D'ETUDE DE L'ENERGIE NUCLEAIRE. April 2, 1958, No. 10653/58. Class 39(4). Radioactive iodine 131 is produced by neutron irradiation of a tellurium compound which is readily soluble in an aqueous solution, dissolving the irradiated compound, and separating iodine 131. Telluric acid after irradiation is dissolved in 2N sulphuric acid and heated to distil off water and iodine 131: tellurium may be recovered from the residual solution by crystallisation or precipitation with nitric acid. Alternatively iodine 131 may be removed from the acid solution by extraction with carbon tetrachloride and then returned to aqueous solution by contacting the carbon tetrachloride with sodium thiosulphate solution.
