Abstract
877,095. Coating with metals. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. July 6, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 23079/59. Addition to 845,410. Class 82(2) [Also in Groups XXII and XXIX] In arc welding or coating as described in the parent Specification in which an arc struck between a non-consumable electrode and a consumable wire is passed together with a stream of gas through a constricted passage in a nozzle, the wire is fed laterally through the wall of the nozzle and is fused to form a metal spray. The workpiece may be conductive or non-conductive and may serve as an electrode. The gas is argon, helium, nitrogen or hydrogen and preferably contains some hydrogen. The wire 16 Fig. 1 is fed by rolls 17 through a passage P in a water-cooled nozzle 11 surrouding a tungsten electrode 10. The current supply is connected between the electrode 10 and the nozzle 11. The arc and gas are passed through a constricted portion of the nozzle 11 which has a divergent outlet 18 to which additional gas is supplied. In a modification, Fig. 4, the current supply is connected betwen the workpiece 29 and the electrode 10 and also through resistors 26, 30 to the nozzle 11 and the wire 16 which is insulated from the nozzle. The current is connected to the wire 16 at a substantial distance from the nozzle 11 to increase the resistance heating effect. Reference is made to the use of aluminium, steel and 80% Ni-20% Cu wires and to the last two wires being used to coat a steel workpiece. The nozzle passage may be circular, rectangular, square or oval.
