Abstract

<PICT:0877066/III/1> Pickle liquor is withdrawn continuously from the pickle bath and fed to an evaporator operating at reduced pressure in which a slurry of hydrated ferrous chloride crystals is formed. This slurry is removed, the crystals separated, and the mother liquor returned to the evaporator. The vapours from the evaporator are passed to a condenser, preferably via a separator to remove entrained liquid which is returned to the evaporator, and the condensed vapours, together with make-up hydrochloric acid, are returned to the pickle bath. The vacuum in the evaporator may be maintained by extracting the uncondensed gases from the condenser. In the drawing, an evaporator 10, consisting of a steam heated calandria, is fed with pickle liquor from tank 16. The slurry therein formed is passed to separator 11, and from thence to filter or centrifuge 29, the ferrous chloride crystals being withdrawn at 30 and the mother liquor being recycled to the evaporator via 31. The vapours pass through a vapour/liquid separator 33, from which the liquid is returned to the evaporator, and the vapour enters condenser 36, from whence the liquid is returned to pickle bath 16. A vacuum is maintained in the system by means of an air ejector 40 or other suitable device, for example a pump.
