Abstract
877,016. Vehicle washing apparatus. COX, R. E. May 3, 1960 [May 5, 1959]; No. 15323/59. Class 138(1). Apparatus for washing a public service or other road vehicle comprises a frame 11 carrying at its lower end rotary brushes 13 and a perforated pipe 15 supplying cleaning liquid. The frame 11 is pivoted about a horizontal axis 12 by a cable and winch 17, 18 as the vehicle 10 to be cleaned is driven towards the winch, so that the brush 13 and pipe 15 are raised over the front of the vehicle to pass over the roof. The rear of the vehicle is cleaned by allowing the brush 13 and pipe 15 to fall from the top of the vehicle rear over the rear surface as the vehicle is moved-forwardly. The brush 13 is rotated by an electric motor (not shown). A feeler wheel 16, adapted to engage the vehicle surface to be cleaned, is connected to the tube 15 and ensures that the cleaning liquid is discharged in the required direction. The winch 18 is driven by an electric motor controlled by a switch operated by the telescopic spring-loaded spokes of a wheel 19 adapted to be engaged by the moving vehicle, so that the winch motor is energized only when such engagement occurs. In an alternative construction two frames are provided each pivotable about a horizontal axis disposed on or near the ground, the two frames being movable together, one being used for cleaning the front of the vehicle and the other for cleaning the rear as the vehicle is driven through the apparatus.
