Abstract

Copolymers of acetaldehyde are prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of acetaldehyde with up to 15% of another aldehyde, that contains no multiple bonds or aromatic ring systems in alpha-position to the carbonyl group, at below -30 DEG C. in the presence of an initiator for acetaldehyde polymerization. Specified other aldehydes include formaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, and terpene aldehydes. Acetic acid, boron trifluoride and ammonium persulphate are specified initiators, while unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene and cyclohexene, are specified solvents. The copolymers may be cross-linked.
