Abstract
A resinous composition comprises a thermosetting resinous condensate of an aldehyde with a compound containing one or more amino, imino or amido groups, said groups containing aldehyde-reactive hydrogen atoms, and, as light stabilizer therefore, from 0,001%-5% by weight based on the resin solids of a 2, 4-diamino-6-(p-alkoxystyryl)s-triazine. Specified aldehyde reactive compounds are urea, benzoguanamine, melamine, acetoguanamine, formoguanamine, 2-amino-1, 3, 5-triazine, 2, 4, 6-tris(monoalkylamino)-1, 3, 5-triazines, 2, 4, 6-tris (arylamino)-1, 3, 5-triazines, melam, melom, melem, 2-chloro-4, 6-diamino-1, 3, 5-triazine, 2, 4-diamino-6-methylamino-1, 3, 5-triazine, ammeline and ammelide. Specified aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, acrolein, methacrolein, crotonaldehyde, benzaldehyde and furfuraldehyde. Specified light stabilizers are 2, 4-diamino-6-(p-methoxystyryl)-s-triazine and similar compounds wherein the methoxy group is replaced by ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, isobutoxy, isopropoxy, pentoxy, hexoxy and octoxy groups. The condensates may be made in the presence of acid or alkaline catalysts of which many are specified. In the Examples (1) melamine is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of methylamine, the resultant syrup diluted with isopropanol being mixed with 2, 4-diamino-6-(p-methoxystyryl)-s-triazine; (3) a benzoguanamine-formaldehyde resin in solution in a mixture of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and ethanol is mixed with 2, 4-diamino-6-(p-ethoxy-styryl)-s-triazine, a curing agent for the resin and chopped a -cellulose, the resultant composition being moulded into discs; (4) an aqueous urea-formaldehyde resin is mixed with cellulose pulp, 2, 4-diamino-6-(p-ethoxystyryl)-s-triazine, a curing agent for the resin and a lubricant and moulded into discs and (5) melamine is condensed with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide, n-butanol and phosphoric acid are added to form a p butylated resin syrup which is blended with xylol and butanol, a phthalic anhydride-glycerolbenzoic acid condensate, titanium dioxide and 2, 4-diamino- 6-(ppropoxystyryl)- s-triazine, sprayed into steel panels and baked. Specification 673,742 is referred to.ALSO:Anisaldehyde is heated with acetoguanamine in the presence of sulphuric acid, the reaction mixture then slurried with water, neutralised with sodium carbonate, filtered, washed with ethanol, dissolved in an ethanol/water mixture and the resultant 2,4-diamino-6-(p-methoxystyryl)-s-triazine recrystallised therefrom. Specification 673,742 is referred to.ALSO:Primed, Bonderised steel plates ("Bonderised" is a Registered Trade Mark) are sprayed with a solution in xylol and butanol of a blend of a butylated-melamine-formaldehyde resin, a phthalic acid-glycerol-benzoic acid alkyd, titanium dioxide and 2,4-diamino-6-(p-propoxystyryl)-s-triazine, the resultant coating being baked. The last-named compound acts as a U.V. light absorber. Specification 673,742 is referred to.
