Abstract

876,542. Engine starter drives. LAFITTE, T. Jan. 26, 1959 [Feb. 4, 1958; July 31, 1958], No. 2814/59. Addition to 847,955. Class 7(5). An improvement in or modification of the starter as described and claimed in the parent Specification comprises springs acting in opposite directions to one another, the resultant force of the springs causing inter-engagement of the notches formed in the driving sleeve and cogs formed in the driving pinion, while the driving sleeve is returned into its inoperative position by one of the springs or by a further spring acting on the rocker fork of which one end engages in a groove in the driving sleeve. Thus in Fig. 1 a spring 103 is fitted between the washer 100 and the ring 101 so that its thrust opposes the thrust exerted by the spring 9 and only the resultant of these two opposed thrusts acts for interengaging the teeth 6 and 7. In Fig. 3 the spring blades 131 which are preferably provided with small bearing blocks 132 engage the frustoconical surface 133 formed on the driving sleeve 1 with an energy sufficient for ensuring engagement between the teeth 6, and 7 provided on the pinion 8 and on the driving sleeve so as to form a clutch. The springs 131 may be moved outwardly under the effect of centrifugal force so that the pinion and driving sleeve may be separated. The teeth of the gear-wheel 33 may be shaped as shown at 135, Fig. 4 or 136, Fig. 5.
