A device for splicing cinematograph film comprises a base having a die plate 53 in which is a row of perforations 58 corresponding to the film perforations, and also locating pins 55 which can engage in these perforations; a roll of adhesive tape 62 is so mounted that the tape can be unrolled across the join between the pieces of film to be spliced; an arm 73 is mounted so that it can pivot about an axis 70 at right-angles to the length of the die plate, and carries punches in register with the perforations; also mounted on this arm are a pair of cutter blades 79, so disposed, with their cutting edges parallel to the length of the die plate, that they sever the tape flush with the two edges of the die plate. Before splicing, the edge of each piece of film may be trimmed by placing it on a further plate 65 having locating pins 67, and cutting it across with a guillotine blade 68 acting against the edge 66 of the plate 65. The two pieces of film to be spliced are then positioned on the die pla'e by means of the pins 55 so that their ends either abut or overlap. Adhesive tape is unrolled so as to cover the whole width of the die plate 53, and then the arm 73 brought down so that the tape is severed. At the same time holes are punched in the tape where it covers the film perforations. The arm has a lower plate 75 which is used to keep the film pressed down while allowing the arm to be raised sufficiently for the punches to be disengaged from the film. The severed portion of the tape is wider than the film 57, and can therefore be folded underneath to reinforce the join. This modification of the splicer described in Specification 855,321 is particularly suitable for sub-standard film having perforations along one edge only.
