Foils are coated with aqueous dispersions or emulsions of synthetic polymers by first being placed under tension by shrinking, the aqueous dispersion is then applied to the completely smooth foil and the foil is immediately subjected to a brief drying at high temperature by infra-red rays and finally completely dried, the tension throughout being adjusted by supporting means at the margins. Specified base foils include those of regenerated cellulose, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, paper, polyvinylidene chloride, or parchment. Suitable coatings include dispersions of polyvinylidene chloride and its copolymers, polyvinyl chloride dispersions, polyethylene emulsions, and dispersions of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid esters, polyvinyl acetate and polystyrene. An anchor coating of e.g. urea- or melamine-formaldehyde condensates, polyethylene imine, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl ether, polyisobutylene, epoxy resins, sizes and adhesives in aqueous or organic solutions or dispersions, may be applied prior to coating with the synthetic polymer. The foil may be coated on one or both'sides.
