Abstract
875,968. Gas-blast switches. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Nov. 24, 1959 [Dec. 6, 1958], No. 39784/59. Class 38 (5). The interrupting chamber of a gas-blast circuit-breaker comprises a tubular insulator 1 carrying a hollow fixed contact 2 and mounted at one end of a metal cylinder 5 in which slides a piston 4 biased downwardly by a spring 7 and carrying a hollow contact 3, a fixed arcing contact 6 also being provided. Blast gas is admitted through an annular opening 1a to lift piston 4 and extinguish the arc, an annular opening 9 which communicates with an outlet channel 8 serving to exhaust hot ionized gas from the arcing zone. To prevent undue loss of cool gas, the opening 9 contains a cooling grid 10 which presents a relatively high flow resistance to the cool gas and a relatively low resistance to the hot gas. The grid 10 may comprise a number of concentric closely-spaced tubes or a solid member with axially-drilled holes.
