Abstract
4,5,6,7,10,10-Hexachloro-4,7-endomethylene-4,7,8, 9-tetrahydrophthalan, of formula <FORM:0875957/IV (b)/1> is prepared in a single step by heating hexachlorocyclopentadiene with 1,4-dihydroxybut2-ene in an inert solvent in the presence of a strong acid catalyst and removing water from the reaction mixture as it is formed. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of up to 5% of acid catalyst, based on the diol, and at 100-235 DEG C. Preferred solvents are C4-C10 alcohols and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethane. Specified acid catalysts are sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, hydro-bromic, hydriodic and toluene sulphonic acids. The product separates out as the reaction mixture is cooled, and may be further chlorinated to give 1,3,4,5,6,7,10,10-octachloro-4,7 - endomethylene-4,7,8,9-tetrahydrophthalan (the insecticide "Compound 6700").
