Abstract
As-spun undrawn threads made from fused linear polymers are immediately following melt-spinning concurrently subjected to a sizing bath operation having an aqueous phase and treatment with at least one reactive substance selected from the group consisting of aldehydes, diazomethane, other diazocompounds, ethylene oxide and dioxane, the reactive substance being dissolved in the aqueous phase of the sizing bath, and the threads are subsequently collected on a bobbin. Preferably the sizing bath further contains at least one water-miscible or water-emulsible organic liquid solvent having a swelling action on the melt-spun filaments, e.g. cresols, phenol, solutions of naphthols and formic acid. Specified synthetic linear polymers are polyurethanes, polyvinyls and polyamides, e.g. polycaprolactam. Examples are given.
