Abstract
874,887. Injection moulding footwear. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Nov. 13, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956; Nov. 1, 1957], Nos. 34600/56 and 34113/57. Class 87(2). A machine for injection moulding plastic soles on to footwear uppers or for moulding complete articles of footwear from plastic materials comprises a number of moulds M mounted on a carrier 20 by means of which they are moved successively into position adjacent an injection mechanism, each of the moulds having a pair of side mould members M 1 , M 2 one movable towards and away from the other, and a movable sole mould member B, which are arranged with respect to a foot form F so as to provide the required mould cavity. The foot form F is movable from its operative position to one intermediate of the side mould members M 1 , M 2 , to facilitate removal of a shoe from the form. The side mould members M 1 , M 2 are mounted on supporting members 50, 52 which are hingedly connected to a supporting member 56 for the sole mould member B. The moulds are revolved intermittently by the carrier 20 between a loading station, a mouldclosing station, an injection station, and a mould-opening station. Each of the upper mould supporting members 50 has a mould opening and closing member in the form of a pin 102 which can be gripped by a pin-embracing member 104 and a tongue portion 108 pivotally mounted on a pin 110. The tongue portion 108 forms part of a carrier member 112 supported on a parallel linkage system comprising the pairs of links 120, 122. The member 104 is swung to its pin-embracing position by the cam 160 acting on the plunger 118. Upward movement of the rack 148, when fluid under pressure is admitted below the piston in cylinder 154, will swing the links 120, 122 clockwise to the positions they occupy in Fig. 4 thus closing the mould box. On arrival at the injection station, the mould box may be latched by a pair of latch members 310, each of which is carried by a link with which it forms an inverted toggle arrangement. The toggles are " made " by rearward pressure on the upper portions 326 by a piston device (not shown), the portions 320 engaging beneath the blocks 322. During the injection of the plastic, the mould box is firmly clamped in position by piston rods 346, on which are freely mounted bearing blocks 348, being thrust downwards to deflect the table 20 until it is firmly seated on the bearing blocks 340, 342. For unlatching the latch members 310 prior to opening the mould boxes, a member 350 is pivotally mounted on arm 354 so as to engage an abutment 351 on the upper end portion 326 of latch member 310 when the plunger 372 in cylinder 380 is moved forward, thus breaking the toggle linkage referred to above. A fluid pressure power unit and associated circuit and control means automatically effect a power cycle of operation of the mechanisms at the various stations of the machine. Specifications 704,884, 831,192 and 831,193 are referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
