Abstract
874,660. Thermo-couples. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 13, 1959 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37076/58. Class 37. In a thermo-electric device which may be used as a generator or for refrigeration a thermocouple assembly is mounted between the walls of two coaxial metallic tubular heat-exchange members, one of which is composed of sections connected in such a manner as to permit relative movement between the sections so that the thermo-couple assembly is not strained by differential thermal expansion between the members. Suitable materials for the elements of the thermo-couples have the generic formula X2Y3, where X represents at least one of the elements bismuth, antimony, arsenic, and Y represents at least one of the elements tellurium, selenium, sulphur; e.g. bismuth telluride. As shown, Fig. 1, annular elements 3 of alternately P- and N-type material, which may be formed by sintering, are arranged coaxially, being spaced apart by insulating material 7. The inner peripheries of alternate pairs of adjacent elements are connected by conducting rings 4 and the outer peripheries of adjacent elements of adjacent pairs are connected by conducting rings 5 which comprise cylindrical extensions 6. The assembly is mounted with its inner junctions adjacent an inner tubular heat-exchange member 1 but electrically insulated from it by a thin coating 9 of insulating material; a similar coating 11 is interposed between the outer junctions and an outer tubular heatexchange member 2, which is provided with expansion joints 12 of the bellows-type to allow for differential expansion. Alternatively, the outer heat-exchange member is made up of discrete cylindrical sections spaced apart axially, the gap between sections being sealed by flexible 0-rings. Fig. 3 shows an assembly made up of elements 3 disposed between inner and outer conducting rings 4, 5 the assembly being encased in resin and the rings 4, 5 being cut at appropriate points to connect the elements in series. A number of such assemblies are mounted between inner and outer heat-exchange members and are interconnected electrically in series. When the device is used as a thermo-electric generator, steam or other hot fluid is passed through the inner heatexchange member while the outer heat-exchange member, which may be finned, is cooled.
